The Doleful State of the Damned by Samuel Moodey is an exceptional work on hell and the fate of those who are not converted before they die. Samuel Moodey believed that many in the church, even in his time, were not genuine believers, and would spend eternity in hell. According to Moodey, “it must needs be a great mistake, to think that all or most church members shall be saved.” Moodey writes the unconverted are sent “out of the world in a false dream: God is merciful; Christ died for sinners; thou hast lived well, and done good...all have their failings. Thus the false title to an eternal kingdom is easily proved in a blind court.” Moodey deals with the decrees of God, the sobering truth that man’s destruction is of himself, the correlation between election and salvation, the apprehensions of the saints’ happiness in heaven by the wicked, which will dreadfully aggravate their own eternal misery, and a number of other topics.
